Harvest 2018 : after a record month of August

14 September 2018

The 2018 harvest, early this year, is in full swing in the vineyards of Maison Jean Loron in Beaujolais and slowly ends in the South of Burgundy.

This year, more than in previous ones, the phenolic maturity (tannins and anthocyanins) had to be patiently awaited. Thus, the date of the harvest at Maison Jean Loron was postponed by 8 days after the official date of the harvest in Beaujolais. In Mâconnais, the 2018 vintage is also in the “early vintage” category.

To return to the pre-harvest weather conditions: the summer of 2018 is close to the temperatures recorded in 2015 or 2017. Remarkably, the month of August 2018 entered the trio of the hottest August since 1959. This heat wave had temporarily stopped the ripening of the grapes. Today, the grapes are extraordinarily healthy and enjoy perfect aromatic ripeness. The cool nights contrast with the still very hot days, causing a very satisfactory harvest from a qualitative point of view, but also quantitative as we haven’t experienced any climatological incident or a disease during the development of the grapes.

Château de Fleurie, Domaine de la Vieille Eglise, Château de Bellevue, … in each estate, the art of winemaking is guided by Jean-Pierre Rodet and Frédéric Maignet.
